Helping Talented Agents Close More Sales

Carrier Updates

In 2018 Walgreens is out of network for Aetna Medicare Rx Select (PDP); Rite Aid is in network with a standard cost share. Due to Walgreens's recent purchase of Rite Aid there are members whose pharmacy will become out-of-network.

In 2017, Walgreens announced the purchase of nearly 2,000 Rite Aid pharmacies. The transition of the purchased stores began in October 2017. As specific Rite Aid pharmacies transition to Walgreens, they move out-of-network for Aetna Medicare RX Select PDP members. Members who have been filling in-network scripts at the impacted stores have not received any notification of the transition and their prescription fills will reject once the store is acquired.

To assist the members Aetna is mailing a postcard to all members who have filled medication at the impacted Rite Aid locations. The postcard lets the member know their Rite Aid was purchased by Walgreens and that Walgreens is out of network for their Aetna Medicare RX Select plan. Aetna is trying to assist the member in finding another network pharmacy.

Below is the message that will be sent on the postcards to all affected members:

The <Rite Aid> pharmacy you used will no longer be in your plan’s network

Let’s find a network pharmacy near you

This year you used a <Rite Aid> pharmacy to fill prescriptions. The store you used has been purchased by <Walgreens>. <Walgreens> is not a network pharmacy for your [new] Aetna Medicare Rx Select (PDP). Generally, we only cover prescriptions if you use a network pharmacy. To find a new pharmacy, <visit> or call us at the number on your ID card.

Did you know using a preferred pharmacy may help you save on your prescriptions? Some of your preferred pharmacies include <CVS Pharmacy, Kroger, Publix, Safeway, ShopRite, Albertsons, and Costco>.
